With the strong and consistent growth as well as demand of the health care and biomedical industries, Marquette’s MS in Biomedical Sciences program will serve to enrich academic and experiential/professional credentials for those interested in pursuing a full range of biomedical careers or pursuing further health professional study.
This program is specifically designed to address modern, contemporary needs and opportunities for biomedical students by strategically providing a program that will facilitate matriculation into professional health programs while also equipping graduates with marketable skill sets that enable direct entry into the work force.
A dynamic program providing professional skills to succeed
Through specific seminars and career practicums, students will be able to choose a program of study that focuses on laboratory techniques and research skills, or science instruction in biomedical sciences. Students in the laboratory research track will gain hands-on experience working in a contract research organization within the Department of Biomedical Sciences or as part of a biomedical sciences faculty member's research program.
Students in the instructional track will gain mentored teaching experience by providing instructional support in biomedical sciences undergraduate or health professional courses or implementing science outreach, depending on the student's interest. In addition, students will have the option to pursue either of these tracks within two specializations: neuroscience and human anatomical sciences.

Our graduate program training offers a master's in biomedical sciences with the option to choose a specialization in one of two areas.
Acquire a foundational background in core neuroscience concepts, including a strong understanding of both neuronal and non-neuronal cells of the nervous system.
Learn how to be an effective biomedical sciences and anatomy instructor through specialized, hands-on instruction and course work.
Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
- Explain fundamental principles in biomedical sciences and synthesize advanced knowledge within specific biomedical subjects.
- Demonstrate the ability to apply analytical approaches, problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, and critical evaluation of scientific literature used in biomedical sciences.
- Demonstrate effective professional communication and presentation skills, both oral and written.
- Demonstrate competency in career-enabling skill sets consistent with the student’s chosen track (e.g., laboratory research or instructional techniques used in biomedical sciences).
- Exhibit professionalism and interpersonal skills required of a professional biomedical scientist.
Biomedical science is a broad, encompassing field that includes human physiology, pathology, anatomy and pharmacology. These subject areas are used to draw conclusions and advances related to human health issues. The utility of an advanced degree in biomedical sciences is illustrated by the numerous and varied career opportunities that are not only currently available but will continue to become available in the future, since human health related careers are always in demand, given the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected 16% growth in this sector by 2030.
Further, search results from organizations such as Glassdoor that provide salary reports and open position listings yield more than 500 open positions that list a salary above $79,000/year for those with a master’s degree in biomedical sciences. These careers span clinical and practical careers in academia, industry and the health professions.

Rolling admissions will begin January 2024 and continue dependent on space availability in the program until the start of the program (summer 2024).
Eligible students should have completed a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution and have successfully completed at least 2 semesters of general biology and general chemistry, and 1 semester of organic chemistry or biochemistry is strongly recommended. All college-level course work should be completed with minimum GPAs of 3.0 cumulative and 2.8 in the sciences.
Applications must include:
- A completed online application form and fee payment.
- Personal statement of no more than 500 words addressing the purpose for applying to the program, ability to successfully complete the program and goals (short and long term).
- One letter of recommendation addressing the applicant's academic, professional, clinical, personal attributes and/or potential for meaningful graduate study.
- For international applicants only, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test completed within the previous six years. Official scores must be sent to Marquette University directly from Educational Testing Services.
- For international applicants only, a minimum acceptable score on the iBT TOEFL exam of 90 overall, with minimum section scores of 25 for listening and speaking, and minimum scores of 20 for reading and writing, or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.
