Video: VPN Software, Paired with the Duo App on Your Smart Phone

Expand all   |   Collapse all

What's VPN and what should I use it for?

GlobalProtect VPN connects you to campus-restricted resources. VPN is for students, faculty and staff who already have a commercial high-speed Internet service.

Please do not use VPN for:

  • Office 365 (email, Microsoft Teams, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint, Planner)
  • CheckMarq
  • D2L e-learning
  • EmpCenter timekeeping
  • MARQetplace e-procurement
  • Kuali Research

Please use VPN only for these resources:

  • MyJob Financial System and Employee Self Service
  • Some library resources (although many can be reached with just your Marquette username and password)
  • MarqIt (University Advancement CRM)
  • ImageNow document imaging system
  • Omni CMS and Adobe Contribute/Dreamweaver web authoring
  • Campus-restricted websites such as Purchasing and Comptroller
  • AMOS and Minitab (statistical software)
  • Various college specific systems

What's this separate tool called Duo?

Duo helps protects your login with an extra layer of security called Multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA uses a secondary device, such as smart phone with the Duo app or a landline phone call, to verify your identity. Duo helps prevent anyone but you from accessing your account — even if they know your password.

How do I start using GlobalProtect VPN and Duo?

NOTE: You must register with the Duo multi-factor authentication service before attempting the VPN instructions. If you have already registered with Duo for Office 365, you can skip the Duo registration (Step 1 below) and go straight to the VPN installation instructions.

  1. Using Marquette VPN with Duo MFA is easy and starts with registering your device (smartphone, cellphone, or landline) to Duo.

If you have already registered a device with Duo, skip this step.

  2. Download and install the GlobalProtect VPN software:

  3. Launch GlobalProtect VPN.

If using Windows or Mac, you can launch GlobalProtect VPN application by searching for GlobalProtect via Windows Search or Mac Spotlight Search. You can also launch the software by clicking the GlobalProtect icon in the Windows Taskbar or Mac Menu Bar.

  4. When prompted, type vpn.marquette.edu as the portal address and then click or tap Connect.

  5. Type your username (not your email address) and password.

    Click or tap Sign In.

NOTE: If you are using Duo hardware or software codes for authentication, please follow these instructions:

  6. GlobalProtect VPN will change to Connecting and during this time Duo Mobile will prompt you in one of two ways:

  7. Sample Duo Mobile Prompt

  8. After approving the Duo authentication prompt, GlobalProtect will change to Connected and VPN is now activated. You will now have access to campus-restricted resources. When you are finished using campus-restricted resources just click or tap the Disconnect button.

    Reconnecting to VPN

The next time you need to use VPN, just use the GlobalProtect software with Duo to connect to VPN, starting with Step 3 above. There is no need to return to the https://vpn.marquette.edu installation website unless you need to reinstall the software.

Didn't get a Duo mobile prompt?

A common problem is that users have Duo installed and registered, but they are not getting the prompt when connecting to Duo-protected services. This is usually due to notifications not being enabled for the Duo app. You can troubleshoot this issue with these helpful guides from Duo Security.

Have a new smartphone?

If your previous smartphone used the Duo mobile app, you will need to contact the IT Services Help Desk to reauthorize your new phone to use the Duo app.
