Most students don't need to do anything special to connect to the wired network. The default network settings are typically to use DHCP and the network card driver is usually already installed by the computer manufacturer. However, if students do not have the network card installed or do not have their computer configured to use DHCP they can follow the instructions below to make the configuration changes to connect a Windows computer to the wired network.
STEP 1: Plug into the network with a cable
- Plug one end of a working RJ45 cable (network cable) into your PC’s Ethernet jack and the other end into the network jack in the wall. If you have not already done so, start up and login to your PC.
- Press the Windows logo key and the X key on the keyboard to open Computer Management.
STEP 2: Open the Device Manager Window to select your network adapter
- Click the Device Manager (left) and click the arrow to expand Network adapters.
Look for your network card by name. (Your network card name may differ from the one pictured below.) Ignore the Dial-up adapter if it’s listed.
- Note: if any of the following occur then windows did not correctly configure the card and you can contact the IT Services Help Desk at (414) 288- 7799 to schedule a technical support appointment.
- Network adapters does not show
- Your network card shows up by name with a yellow triangle
- Your network card is not listed under network adapters
STEP 3: Network Connections
- Close the Device Manager Window.
- On the keyboard, press Windows Logo+ X and select Control Panel.
- Under Network and Internet, click View network status and tasks. Click Ethernet located next to Connections which opens the Ethernet status panel. Click Properties.

STEP 4: Ethernet Properties
In the Networking tab, a list of network components will appear.
- If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) appears in the installed components list, you’re ready to go to step 5.
- If internet protocol (TCP/IPv4) does not appear in the installed components list, then complete the following steps:
- Click Install > Protocol > Add.
- In the select protocol dialog box, select the protocol to install (Version 4) and click OK.
- If you are installing both TCP/IPV6 and TCP/IPV4, repeat this procedure for each protocol.
- In the Ethernet properties dialog box, make sure Internet Protocol Version 6 and Version 4 are selected and click OK.

STEP 5: Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/TPv4).
- Click Properties.
- Click the General tab > Obtain an IP address automatically > Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click OK and close out of the Ethernet Status dialog box.
STEP 6: Final Step
Restart computer and test your network connection by launching a web browser.
