Circulation Supervisor

Overview

Marquette University Libraries is seeking a Circulation Supervisor to be part of a team of staff members who serve Marquette’s campus community and visitors, both in person and virtually and are responsible for access security, library circulation functions, patron services, and building operations. The supervision and mentoring of student employees are important contributors to student success. As such, this position will take the lead on the hiring, training, and scheduling of student employees at the circulation desk who support the library’s circulation services and information assistance. The successful candidate will be customer service-oriented, flexible, and comfortable working with student employees. Position hours are 1:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Sunday – Thursday.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the operation of the Circulation Desk, serving as one of the supervisors of the circulation desk on Sundays; work regular circulation desk shifts during the week
  • Supervises the Visitor Registration Desk and provides for the safety and security of all patrons through application of the University mandated restricted access visitor policy.
  • Hires, schedules, and coordinates training including the development of training materials for the library’s circulation desk student employees.
  • Develops and communicates goals and objectives for circulation desk student employees
  • Serves as the lead on evaluating circulation desk student employees, in conjunction with other Access Services Staff
  • Answers inquiries concerning overdue books, recalls, and fines; serve as a resource for questions related to other Library services
  • Assists library users in finding information and materials using the library catalog and databases
  • Monitors the entry turnstiles using MUPD CCure monitoring/client software. When a turnstile access issue arises, uses other campus resources such as CheckMarq and Raiser’s Edge to assess problems and direct users to campus offices able to resolve issues.
  • Participates in department tasks such as shelving and shifting books, checking out items to patron, and collecting relevant statistics
  • Participates in department and external meetings, and training seminars as appropriate.
  • Participates in the development, revision, and implementation of library and visitor policies in collaboration with the Head of Access Services.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested. 

Required Qualifications

  • 2 years relevant experience. Library experience strongly preferred.
  • 2 years of college or other post high school education
  • Experience providing supervision, leadership, or training
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products, such as Outlook, Excel and Word
  • Must be flexible, able to multi-task, and adaptable to rapid change
  • Ability to develop knowledge of departmental operations, policies and procedures, and exercise independent judgment, including discretion in the resolution of minor problems and details
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience working in a library, preferably an academic library
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems, such as Sierra
  • Experience working with college students
