International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP)

International graduate teaching assistants who will be teaching undergraduate students in the classroom are required to participate in the International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP). For Fall 2022, ITAP will be held on August 16th, 17th, and 18th from 10am to 4pm.  A detailed schedule will be emailed the week before ITAP begins.

About the program

ITAP is a 3-day intensive preparation program held two weeks prior to the start of the fall semester. The International TA Program helps prepare new international teaching assistants for their role as TAs at Marquette.

This program provides workshops designed to introduce and review the skills international TAs need to successfully interact with American undergraduate students. The topics covered include American university culture, teacher/student roles, presentation skills, classroom management, and culture shock. The program also features a luncheon with experienced undergraduate international TA student panels.

During the program, international TAs take a 2-part assessment, which evaluates their English and presentation skills. Department representatives are encouraged to attend the micro-teaching part of the test to help inform the assessment of the presentations.
