The TAKES ACTION acronym should be utilized when accessing the need for intervention and/or when taking the steps to actively intervene. Marquette community members must assume personal responsibility to help and/or protect each other. Community members must: Assume responsibility. As members of the Marquette community, we recognize that we not only have a right to be protected, but a responsibility to protect.
One of the keys to bystander mobilization is RECOGNIZING THE EVENT! To do this, we must all be PERSONALLY AWARE in our environment! For example, if you saw someone with a major injury, there would be no doubt in your mind that you would call for help, in recognizing the person needed help. However, in situations such as a roommate’s depressed mood or increased drinking, intervention may still be needed, but it’s much harder to recognize. It is important that when we recognize these things, that we take the time and effort to communicate with each other. It is much more important that you ask the “difficult questions,” rather than ignore the problem “hoping it will take care of itself.”
The strength of the TAKES ACTION program lies in its communication training. Focusing on non-escalatory and non-judgmental engagement phrases, students learn how to quickly and effectively defuse conflict through conversation and generate positive outcomes.
