Environmental Engineering Certificate for Professionals

The certificate in environmental engineering is designed to allow engineers from a variety of disciplines the ability to expand their depth and breadth of knowledge to solve complex environmental engineering problems to protect public health and the environment. Students will gain a greater technical understanding of problems associated with air, land and water resources. 

Flexible, affordable graduate certificates

We recognize the importance of flexibility to those pursuing graduate education, especially to practicing engineers. That’s why we offer you the opportunity to complete our certificates on a full- or part-time basis. 

In an effort to support engineers completing their certificates, the Dean of the Opus College of Engineering is offering up to 5 tuition scholarship credits for those enrolled in a 12 credit certificate. For more information, please speak with our admissions specialist.

Learning Outcomes

The knowledge and skills gained in course offerings, students will be able to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of the built and natural environment. This will include resource management, pollution control, waste and hazardous material disposal, health and safety protection, conservation, and requirements for protection of special materials and related work environments.

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School at Marquette University, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Applicants who do not have an engineering degree must complete prerequisite engineering requirements. The list of required prerequisite course(s) is determined during the academic advising process. Students who do not meet the 3.000 requirement, but have completed one year of engineering work experience, are reviewed and considered based upon a letter of recommendation from their supervisor to determine the applicant’s ability to complete advanced course work.

Application Requirements

Read all application instructions prior to beginning an application.

1Upon admission, final official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities, with certified English translations if original language is not English, must be submitted to the Graduate School within the first five weeks of the term of admission or a hold preventing registration for future terms will be placed on the student’s record.

This program has rolling admission, which means you may apply and submit all application materials any time before the following dates:

  • Fall term admissions – August 1
  • Spring term admissions – December 15 

Applicants who wish to be considered for merit-based financial aid (scholarships) should be aware of the merit-based financial aid deadlines by which all applicant materials must be received by the Graduate School:

  • Fall term: February 15
  • Spring term: November 15

Dr. Brooke Mayer

Dr. Brooke MayerBrooke Mayer (PhD, Arizona State University) is a licensed Professional Engineer and Associate Professor with over 15 years of experience in nutrient removal and recovery from water/wastewater and mitigation of pathogens and disinfection byproducts for drinking water treatment. Dr. Mayer co-leads an annual Emerging Contaminants short course.

 

 


 

Dr. Daniel Zitomer

Dan H. ZitomerDaniel Zitomer (PhD, Vanderbilt University) is a licensed Professional Engineer and Chair and Professor with over 30 years of experience specializing in anaerobic biotechnology for water treatment and renewable biofuels.  Dr. Zitomer is the Director of the Marquette University’s Water Quality Center and leads the Anaerobic Treatment short course in collaboration with industry partners. Dr. Zitomer is also the site director for the NSF sponsored Water Equipment and Policy research center that develops the next generation of water technologies with industry members.


 

Dr. Walter McDonald

Dr. Walter McDonaldWalter McDonald (PhD, Virginia Tech) is an Assistant professor specializing in urban stormwater, remote sensing, and hydrology. His research integrates an innovative span of environmental monitoring, stormwater management, and data analytics. Specific projects include drone remote sensing of hydrologic processes, real-time control of stormwater systems, and monitoring of stormwater best management practices.

 

 


 

Dr. Patrick McNamara

Dr. Patrick McNamaraPatrick McNamara (PhD, The University of Minnesota) is an Associate Professor specializing in emerging contaminants, antibiotic resistance, and biosolids management for wastewater treatment.  Dr. McNamara co-leads an annual Emerging Contaminants short course.

 

 

 

 


 

Dr. Anthony Parolari

Anthony ParolariAnthony Parolari (PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) is an Assistant Professor specializing in ecohydrology with applications to natural and engineered systems, like green infrastructure. His research interests include model development and data analysis for improved operation and management of engineered water systems.

 

 


 

Dr. Jeffrey Starke

Jeffrey StarkeJeffrey A. Starke (PhD, University Wisconsin-Madison) is a PE with over 16 years of experience with the US Army.  Dr. Starke teaches the environmental laboratory courses as well as the hazardous and industrial waste course.
